Comfort is a relative term, but it is possible to travel in Brasil ver inexpensively. I will give you some typical prices in Brazilian currency to give you an idea. Be sure and update the currency conversion (especially if you are earning in dollars) as the Brazilian Real is appreciating rapidly - it has gone from 2.2 reais to the dollar to 1.85 in just the last 6 months.

One nite in a hostel (cheaper if staying longer): 20-30
Meal at all you can eat buffet: 7-10
Beer (bought on street): 2
Fancy-ish dinner: 25-35
Beer (in a club): 5
bus ticket Rio-SP (6 hrs): 50-80
Ticket to Pão de Açucar en Rio: 35

You can travel very cheaply if you don't go to a lot of nite clubs, avoid spending a lot of time in São Paulo, Florianopolis and Buzios, and generally don't do a lot of prepackaged tours. If your goal is to just hang out at beaches and wander around different cities, you should be fine. However, if you want to do a bunch of Amazon adventures, this gets pricey very quickly, and you will likely not be able to afford it.
