What’s the best way to shell Brazil Nuts?

A friend has given me about 20 pounds of Brazil Nuts. I’m trying to crack and shell the nuts in large pieces to use for brittle but having little success. I heard, years ago, that freezing or boiling helps. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
